Septoplasty

Improving Breathing and Correcting Nasal Obstruction

A deviated septum can make it difficult to breathe through your nose, cause congestion, and contribute to sinus infections or snoring. Septoplasty is a surgical procedure that straightens the nasal septum to restore clear airflow and improve breathing comfort. Our ENT specialists perform this procedure with precision and care to help patients breathe easier and feel better every day.

What Is Septoplasty?

The nasal septum is the thin wall of cartilage and bone that divides the two sides of the nose. When it is crooked or displaced, airflow can become blocked, leading to breathing difficulty and chronic congestion. Septoplasty corrects this by repositioning and reshaping the septum to create a clear, balanced airway.

This procedure is performed through the nostrils with no external incisions. It is often done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia, and most patients return home the same day.

When Septoplasty May Be Recommended

Your provider may recommend septoplasty if you experience:

  • Difficulty breathing through one or both sides of the nose
  • Frequent nasal congestion or obstruction
  • Chronic sinus infections related to poor airflow
  • Nosebleeds caused by septal deviation
  • Snoring or sleep disturbances due to restricted airflow
  • Facial pressure or headaches caused by nasal blockage

What to Expect During the Procedure

  1. Evaluation: Your provider will examine your nasal passages, often using an endoscope, to assess the degree of septal deviation and identify any other issues affecting airflow.
  2. Procedure: Under anesthesia, the surgeon makes a small incision inside the nose to lift the mucous membrane and reshape or remove parts of the deviated cartilage and bone. The septum is then repositioned in the center of the nose.
  3. Recovery: The procedure typically takes about one hour. There are no visible scars, and nasal splints may be placed temporarily to support healing. Most patients return to work or school within a week.
  4. Follow-up: Your provider will schedule follow-up visits to check healing and ensure your breathing has improved.

Benefits of Septoplasty

  • Improved airflow and easier breathing
  • Relief from nasal congestion and sinus pressure
  • Reduction in snoring and sleep disturbances
  • Decreased frequency of sinus infections
  • Enhanced comfort and quality of life

Aftercare and Recovery

Some mild swelling, congestion, or drainage is normal for the first few days after surgery. Patients should avoid strenuous activity until cleared by their provider. Nasal rinses and prescribed medications help reduce swelling and promote healing. Most patients notice a significant improvement in breathing within the first few weeks.

Is Septoplasty Right for You?

If you struggle with nasal congestion or difficulty breathing through your nose, our ENT specialists can determine whether a deviated septum is the cause. Septoplasty is a highly effective solution that can provide lasting relief and improved airflow when other treatments have not helped.
