Adenoid Surgery
Improving Breathing and Reducing Chronic Infections
Enlarged or infected adenoids can cause nasal blockage, snoring, ear infections, and breathing difficulties, especially in children. Adenoid surgery, also called an adenoidectomy, removes the swollen adenoid tissue to restore normal airflow, reduce infections, and improve sleep and comfort.
What Is Adenoid Surgery?
The adenoids are small glands located high in the throat behind the nose. They help the body fight infection, but in some people, especially children, they can become chronically enlarged or infected. This can lead to nasal congestion, frequent ear infections, and sleep disturbances.
Adenoid surgery removes the enlarged tissue to clear the airway and allow normal breathing. The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia and usually takes less than an hour. Most patients go home the same day and recover within a week.
When Adenoid Surgery May Be Recommended
Your provider may recommend an adenoidectomy if you or your child experience:
- Chronic nasal congestion or mouth breathing
 - Snoring or sleep apnea symptoms
 - Frequent or recurring ear infections
 - Persistent sinus infections
 - Difficulty breathing through the nose
 - Ongoing nasal drainage or post-nasal drip

What to Expect During the Procedure
- Evaluation: Your provider will examine the nose and throat and may use imaging or a small camera to assess the size of the adenoids.
 - Procedure: Adenoidectomy is performed through the mouth with no external incisions. The adenoid tissue is removed under general anesthesia.
 - Recovery: Patients usually wake up quickly and return home the same day. Mild sore throat or nasal drainage is common for a few days.
 - Follow-up: Your provider will schedule a post-surgery visit to ensure proper healing and improved breathing.

Benefits of Adenoid Surgery
- Easier breathing through the nose
 - Fewer ear and sinus infections
 - Reduced snoring and better sleep quality
 - Improved energy and comfort
 - Better speech and swallowing in some children

Aftercare and Recovery
After surgery, mild congestion, sore throat, or temporary bad breath may occur and usually resolve within a few days. Encourage rest and plenty of fluids during recovery. Soft foods and cool drinks can help soothe the throat. Most patients resume normal activities within a week.
Is Adenoid Surgery Right for You or Your Child?
Our ENT specialists will determine whether adenoid removal is the best treatment option based on your symptoms or your child’s condition. If medications or other treatments have not provided lasting relief, adenoid surgery can be an effective solution for long-term comfort and better breathing.
